Slim Down for Summer

Well, believe it or not, summer is just around the corner. Before you know it the kids will be home, you’ll be out by the pool, at the ball parks, and at the beach. It sounds like a lot of fun except you’re dreading putting on short pants and tank tops and don’t even want to think about a swimsuit! Maybe you’ve gained a few pounds in the past year and comfortably camouflaged yourself during the winter. But now that it’s time to shed some layers you’re worried!

Make a decision now to put all of that to an end! You don’t have to feel that way. When you think about summer I’m sure you also think about the fun barbecues, parties, and picnics–and of course about the good food that’ll be there. Well, guess what– there are a few SECRETS that I’m going to share with you that will allow you to have the yummy foods you love and enjoy the parties while you lose weight and forget about the guilt.

Always keep snacks on hand. Spreading meals and snacks out evenly throughout the day is very important for increasing metabolism, therefore burning calories more efficiently. Learn to think of scheduled snacks as a way of preventing overeating later in the day. Even if you don’t feel hungry mid-morning, go ahead and eat a few bites of something like cheese and crackers anyway. Trust me–you’ll be grateful mid to late afternoon. Make a habit of keeping these snacks with you at all times–in your purse, car, or desk drawer.

Eat the lighter foods first. This applies any time, but especially when you’re at a barbecue, don’t deprive yourself of the burger–even if it’s not made from the leanest meat. After all, it’s a party! Choose a patty that is no larger than the palm of your hand (consider width and thickness). Fill up at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. A huge salad with 90% vegetables is great as well as all the wonderful fresh summer fruits. If you don’t think these foods will be an option at the party volunteer to bring it yourself. Eat all the fruits and vegetable before you eat the burger! And force yourself to eat slowly–even time yourself if you have to. By the time you get to the burger you’ll be quite full and probably won’t want the whole thing.

Focus on when you eat. As I mentioned earlier, eating at regular intervals throughout the day is very important. When you know that you’ll be attending a party it is important that you consider the time you’ll be eating and schedule around that time as closely as possible. For example, if the party is at 7:00pm and your usual dinner time is 5:30pm, you’ll want to work a light snack into your schedule about an hour before the party. That will prevent you from feeling famished when you get there. When you feel famished it is very hard to make wise decisions.

These simple concepts really make a huge difference in the way your body burns calories and in the way you feel. And you don’t have to feel like you’re missing out on anything. I’d love to give you even more tips that will rev up your metabolism and burn more calories.
