Pills in the movies

December 24th, 2010 No comments

Real life does sometimes appear in movies. You only have to think of Jack Nicholson in “Something’s Gotta Give” to see an older man relying on a little blue pill to ensure a great performance with a hot young woman. Yes, there are some movies that dare to mention the possibility of erectile dysfunction except most pull their punches one way or the other. Which makes it all the more pleasing to see “Love & Other Drugs” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway about a sales representative for Pfizer in the 1990′s just before the little blue pills are launched. This makes the movie one of the most explicit both in the extent of time our leading couple spend naked on the screen and on new ground being broken in product placement. Based on the non-fiction book by Jamie Reidy called, “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman”, this movie makes no secret of our hero’s employer nor the name of their new product. In marketing terms, you can’t have a better platform from which to sell your product than this. Except this is a rather sickly romantic drama in which our sexually athletic hero beds our soon-to-be-ill heroine and then has to turn himself from a love bunny into a supportive caring guy. Like tiger losing stripes and getting leopard spots, or something. Frankly, unless all you want to watch a Hollywood couple put in a significant amount of time naked, this is not the movie for you.

All of which leads to the vital question: what would make a good movie about erectile dysfunction? Or could there ever be a good movie with erectile dysfunction as its main theme? I suppose we could take “American Pie” as a model. Although it’s actually about premature ejaculation, it nevertheless places a sexual problem front and center. Except it’s a comedy. A little like “Silence of the Loins” or “A Hard Day’s Night” or “Flop Gun”. Yes, it’s easy to poke fun at the problem in the appropriately named “Everything You Always Wanted to Ask About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask”, but more serious movies are difficult to find. Except there’s “Bliss” where Craig Sheffer and Sheryl Lee are helped through their sexual problems by Terence Stamp. This is a seriously good movie with everyone listening to and learning from each other to arrive at perfect sex. Or possibly “Lonesome Jim” with Casey Affleck being nursed back to emotional and physical health by Liv Tyler.

Perhaps the real problem is we all feel too embarrassed by the reality of sexual dysfunction, we’d rather not see it on the big screen. It’s not entertaining. This leaves those with the problem in real life the simple solution. You don’t have to wait for Jake Gyllenhaal to make a home delivery. You just order Viagra online. With generic Viagra selling alongside the branded original, it’s your choice whether to pay full price or get the relief you need at a bargain price. In fact, you can solve the problem and still have money left over to go watch a movie.

A closer view on the problem of ED

Regardless of the progress made in the field of treating sexual problems, erectile dysfunction is still a major problem that causes serious psychological impact for many men. The embarrassment and discomfort associated with sexual problems have made erectile dysfunction a subject of jokes rather than serious questions, so there’s no wonder that there are so many doubtful solutions to the problem living as urban legends and home remedies. Of course, the advent of erectile dysfunction medications in the lat 1990′s and early 2000′s has changed the way people percept the problem. However, men still seem to be very disturbed about discussing erectile dysfunction with their doctors, not to mention their partners or friends. Still, by learning more about the problem you will be able to be more open regarding it.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused either by psychological or physiological factors, and quite often there is a mix of both. There are cases when the problem can be medically reversed and treated, while in other cases it’s permanent and untreatable. Most health problems that affect the cardiovascular system and the condition of blood vessels (especially in the penile area) are known to cause erectile dysfunction. For example, chronic alcoholism, diabetes and hypertension are very common causes for the problems in male sexual activities. Physical injury of the penis or the spine can also lead to sexual dysfunction. And there are also many medications that can cause erectile problems as a side effect.

From the psychological point of view, there are many conditions that can interfere with arousal, which is crucial for maintaining good erections. Problems like depression, anxiety disorders, stress, phobia, mental illness and relationship issues, as well as the medications used for treating them, are known to be the major psychological triggers of erectile dysfunction. These problems can also take place due to the aforementioned physiological issues, and when there is a mix of both, it can be quite hard to treat the condition fast.

Still, there’s no reason for being down, as most cases of erectile dysfunction are treatable. Depending on the cause of the problem, your doctor will prescribe either an ED drug like Viagra or special therapy. In most cases of physically induced impotence, Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs are very effective for restoring adequate functions. When psychological problems are the primary cause of sexual disorders, Viagra or Levitra won’t have much of effect. Things like group or cognitive therapy, as well as hypnosis and relationship counseling are proven to be effective for eliminating the psychological triggers of ED.

So, the only thing you have to do when dealing with erectile dysfunction is going to your doctor and talking about your problems. This can be really tough for some men, who are not used to discussing their intimate questions even with doctors. But if you want to get an adequate and effective treatment, there’s no way to go around it. And the sooner you pay your doctor a visit, the more likely it will be to find a suitable solution for the problem. Don’t lay it off, because it’s in your won interest!
